Assettrac Visits ACCA Australia

Assettrac's MD Stephen Laing and Chief Technical Officer, Ian Athersmith at the ACCA conference 2024 where they held a workshop on cemetery software and management headstone and memorial risk assessments digitally.

Little did we forecast that a Sunday lunch in May at our local pub in Sussex introducing Ben
Kelly CEO of The Australian Cemeteries and Crematoria Association (ACCA) to his opposite
number in the UK, Julie Dunk of the ICCM, would result in a long trip ‘down under’ six
months later!

The ACCA conference was a bit of a gamble. We had previously supported the ICCM
annual conference for nearly 25 years but with increasing business with several Australian
councils, it seemed a good opportunity to promote Assettrac’s memorial safety solutions
and Epitrace underground pegs for natural burials. The momentum was assisted with Ben
offering us a workshop slot and a trade stand.

After three long flights Ian and I landed in the warm, South Australian spring and stayed at
the conference hotel by Adelaide’s Oval cricket ground, complete with statue of their most
famous player Don Bradman! The city isn’t large but full of parks, churches, and waterways
and after a day or two of acclimatisation, we set up the trade stand. This time our usual
giveaways were complemented by the raffle of a wonderful chopping board made by Ian
and had customised for the occasion.

Nearly 200 delegates and companies attended the
three-day meeting with representatives from all parts of Australia, as well as New Zealand
and China. It was wonderful to catch up with our new client, Hidde Verberne from
Orthometals.

We were struck by the energy of the conference, lots of conversations and introductions
by Ben. Nearly 50 delegates attended our workshop to learn about how to achieve a
streamlined approach to recording the results of headstone risk assessments; substituting
paper forms with mobile app and cloud-based data storage.

At the close of the event, we were afforded the opportunity to announce the winner of the chopping board which we presented to Susan Lunn from Cairns Regional Council, Queensland.

Back home, we’ve been kept busy following up with the delegates we met and building on our dialogue with ACCA about how we can help them improve oversight of member operations using Assettrac’s software. We’re excited to see how business will further develop in the region, the conference was a great way to kindle new relationships in a short space of time.
